November 12, 2003 - Austin, Texas - With the idea to get some art
tattooed on my arm, and with haunting words of a close relative
repeating, "If God wanted you to get a tattoo, you'd be born with one',
I went ahead anyway and chose some Jack Levine art to stick with me for
a long while. Among the close runners up: Munch's Scream and
Cezanne's card players, both of which would have been like getting the
Mona Lisa.
Anyway, this naughty little cigarette girl (variously described as
voluptuous, big-bottomed, fat) beat out a few other Levine designs
for the final pick.
With two final phone calls, one last visit to Casino El Camino
without a tattoo, I headed up to W. 5th Street to meet up with Ian
and Bobby Love, flipped through the Levine book one last time, and
rolled up my sleeve. After everything got going, I finally
mustered up the courage to watch the needle (I hate needles
desperately) and feeling no pain, sat back for a couple hours till
the outline was done. |

Ian
Shults, tattoo artist extraordinaire

In the chair.

My new lady friend (soon to be in living color)

All wrapped up and no place to go?

Somehow, I also found myself back at Casino El Camino. And running
into fine women like this. Jen, Amy and April.

You the people voted. Green ends up the winner.
And here it is - the long awaited colored in version of this lil
cigarette girl:
