The online chronicles of a painter living in Austin, Texas

THE CURTAIN GETS PEELED BACK...
A RANDOM DAY IN THE LIFE OF MICHAEL SCHLIEFKE
August 24, 2004

BREAKIN' AND PAINTIN'
After sitting on the computer for any length of time makes me want to sit in the sun, go to sleep or drink heavily.  Updating this little site takes up more time than I'd be willing to admit, but at least it's not like my old job from a previous life sitting in a grey cube and staring down two computer screens all day.

So, with my guide written, most of my work done, I headed next door and hung out and joked with the Sodalitas kids for a while.  I then made my way outside to the front patio and hung out in the sun with Rocky for a little while, enjoying the hot air and deciding my new hat was too hot for Texas summers.  It's even black, which is an incredibly stupid thing to wear in August.  Still, I kept wearing it.

PAINTING AWAY
It was about two o'clock when I finally started painting for the day.  I've been stuck for a good month now, kicking around an assortment of paintings that just haven't been progressing as planned.  I'm getting a bit frustrated, and slowly, two big shows are sneaking up on me.  It seems like the past few days I've been getting closer to where I want to be, including having a revelation Friday night while somewhere between my twelfth and fifteenth beer.

LENDING A HAND
My painting was interrupted by a whistle.  It was Armando, our Mexican friend from the falafel place.  He is buying my housemate's extra mattress set, and was wondering if he could pick it up now, as he said 'I need it to-day'.  I gleefully opened up Matt's van, and helped him pull the mattress out through the narrow doors.  He said he had more people over at the house, and they've been unfortunate enough to have been sleeping on air mattresses for a little bit.  I shook my head at that horror, and helped load his pickup with the goods, collected the cash, and sent our friend on his way.

CLASS TIME
With a painting class looming over my head, I decided it just seemed appropriate that I finally put on socks today.  I did, filled up a big glass of water, and met my student, who seemed to be in a similarly frustrated haze that I've been in.  We talked about her painting for a while, figured out a few ways to go with it, and then I took her outside and we stared at a tree for a few minutes.  I think it helped.  Right after class, I ran outside and stared at the trees some more.
