THE CURTAIN GETS PEELED BACK...
A RANDOM DAY IN THE LIFE OF MICHAEL SCHLIEFKE
August 24, 2004
HARD AT
WORK
With plenty on the plate to do, I needed to get going fast if I
wanted to try to sneak some painting in before my five o'clock
class. I had to cut, assemble, and stretch four canvases, and
write up a guide to putting together shows. I really wanted to
continue on the slight progress I've made on a couple of my
paintings recently, so getting the little stuff out of the way was
my top priority.I set up my
power tools, prepared myself for bearing down and getting this done,
and dug through my pile of wood for the right materials. With
just enough canvas on hand for the job, things were starting to fall
into place. |

WOODSHOP LOVE
With my woodshop acumen and confidence at historic heights, I feel like
I can bang out stretchers almost at will. It's amazing what ten
years of experience can do for one's confidence with tablesaws and
knowing good shortcuts to follow, without sacrificing safety. I
made some disastrous woodshop projects over the years, and now my
stretchers are dead on, and I've got a system down to make them fast
too.

MODERN COMMUNICATION
Once My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult CD stopped, I thought it was only
right to finish stretching my canvases to some Southern Culture on the
Skids. Wearing a new foam hat shipped in from Southern California
the day before, it fit the part well, and I chewed down one of the
falafels as I stretched and gessoed canvases. I missed a call on
my phone, which is now newly repaired with the help of rubber bands
holding it all together. It was Chris, who left a message
surprised my line hasn't been disconnected yet. I called him back
when I realized I missed the call, and told him to give it a few days.
When my phone was broken the past couple months, I really enjoyed not
having it around. I'm seriously considering ditching it, but am
somewhat fearful of retreating to Unabomber status in my life.

Figurin' stuff out |
So I ran upstairs, after finishing my
falafel and covering the last canvas in gesso to write up a guide to
putting together shows, detailing hanging wire specifics and including a
press release how to. I was more than disturbed to check my email
and find the little message below forwarded to me from the Bush twins.
It's nice to see young Americans put their lives in perspective and make
something of themselves.
