A FEW GOOD STARTS -
FEBRUARY 2004
February 10, 2004 - With a plethora of new canvases
littering my studio space, a whole bunch of new, brighter, and even
better paintings have begun to peek out from the painted mess of canvas,
palettes and dirty brushes in my studio located at
Blue
Genie. With January and
February's double header of openings now in the rear view, all my
concentration is focused on putting together about 30 paintings by April
for the next two
big shows in my little life here in Austin.
All the photos look crappy because they are works in progress, I'm not
too concerned with taking good pictures of these just yet, so hold on
until they're finished. Plus, my camera really bites.
AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT
THE PAINTING PROCESS
Here's an inside look (a SCHLIEFKEVISION
exclusive) at how the one of my paintings evolved over a week in my
studio.

The initial idea for the painting was two men battling over chess, with a very ungracious winner making a very unconsoling gesture to the losing party. I dropped the man in the background, trying to clean up the clutter and figure out how best to paint the losing man. After some quick sketches, I improved the loser a bit, but still felt he was squished into the frame. I also started to add a woman walking a dog in the background, perhaps the prize won this day in the park. Tried tightening things up a bit, but still was really dissatified with my efforts so far. Back to the drawing board everything went... And with a new suit, a woman protaginist, and a picnic scene taking place of the old chessboard, a whole new vision was created, along with a nicer, more subtle landscape and a whole new meaning. This once self assured champion of chess was now reduced to falling forward and begging for this woman's hand, a hand she is not too willing to extend.
