TURNING THE CORNER March 10, 2006 - With a few intense sixteen hour painting days rolled up into one convenient week, I've started feeling good about the work getting finished for the show in April. I've started in on the backbone for the show, with ten fresh 40"x50" canvases blossoming before my eyes.
With a title for the show to tie everything together, I'm now working hard under one umbrella. The work is divergent, but I believe its cohesive and develops a lot of ideas and themes that have always appeared in my work in new ways.
I'm still in love with my new palette, and I wonder just how long I could've painted without Naple's Yellow or the orange-y tones of cadmium yellow medium. It addition to the shifting palette, I'm trying to keep the initial bursts of the painting carry through to the end. It's at the start of the painting that I'm digging through the imagery and colors, correcting compositional mistakes and bringing images forward and back through the picture planes. I like seeing the vitality of the mark and contrasting areas of washy turpentine to
thick knifed paint. | | It's always been a fine line to see just how far I can push the imagery in this manner, and so far, I'm feeling confident I'll arrive at a good place. I'm working simultaneously on ten of these large canvases right now, with four more primed and waiting in the wings. Along with almost a dozen smaller canvases in various stages sitting on the sidelines right now,
this could be the biggest show I've had to date in terms of new work.
It all opens on April 21st, so mark your calendars, or take a look at the 'What if We Could Get it All Back' webpage. |
