SCHLIEFKEVISION TURNS TWO!
RETURN TO THE SCENE OF THE CRIME
January 27, 2005- I woke up on the second anniversary of the launch of
this website a little hung over after drinking too many Busch beers (I
spent 60 cents more on the twelve pack to honor
Chris
Chappell's former favorite). Checking my email, I found out
PETA was having a naked protest at the corner of Sixth and Congress -
the very spot Chris and I found the twenty inch device
that inspired me to start this website. |

Chris barely read the forwarded info, instead putting off construction
on the addition to his house and deciding this was much too important an
endeavor to pass up. While driving across town to pick me up, I
told him this was also the anniversary of this site, he understood the
tone in my voice and realized "this was a spiritual quest, almost like a
mission from God."

Just a random shot of a woman in a business suit
carrying an umbrella. |
Two things could have made the day
better - instead of yesterday's 80 degree beauty, the weather
was miserably rainy and cold, and Chris left the house without
Hudi, his dog, which could've added to the spectacle
nicely. We found a place to park, ran through downtown,
dodging rain drops and pedestrians, until we finally saw a line of
police cars, with more pulling up. Disappointed, we thought
we missed the flash of nudity and the whole story. Instead, as
we got closer, realized we were in the thick of it - TV news crews
and cops everywhere, with a healthy dollop of Austin's Downtown
Rangers thrown into the mix for good measure, and a few curious
pedestrians, most of whom had digital cameras.
There were three women and one guy, all topless, all smiling and
waving for the cameras and curious people going about their
business. I heard bits and pieces about raising awareness for
not buying furs around Valentine's Day as they were each interviewed
by the press, but mostly, it was a sad, rainy moment, anticlimactic
to say the least when the naked protesters were wearing
panties and even pasties.

After snapping some pictures, picking up some flyers and starting to
feel like sad men for taking pictures of this ridiculous little affair,
we stopped by the exact spot to catch up with old times. After
taking some pictures, we wandered through downtown a bit, unknowingly
helping a heroin addict catch his bus by making it wait as we walked in
front of it. The man with a mohawk pointed out our brotherly act,
thanked us for it, and we were all on our merry ways once again.
