The online chronicles of a painter living in Austin, Texas

MY DAY WITH ALEX JONES

"We should not allow ourselves to be crammed into this rat maze! We should not submit to dehumanization!"
- Alex Jones,
WAKING LIFE

March 30, 2003 Austin, Texas - It was a Sunday morning like most others - a bit bleary eyed, headachy, the sort of symptoms easily washed away with a good shower and ample glasses of water. But this Sunday carried an electric buzz in the air - it was the day I was going to the Alamo Drafthouse to see Alex Jones speak before showing his latest film, '911, The Road to Tyranny'.

To the uninitiated, Alex Jones is a crackpot with a local cable access show and a nationally syndicated radio show ranting about the New World Order taking control of the planet. To his legion of fans, he's the leading light of truth exposing the New World Order's plans to control the planet. I'd have to admit to falling somewhere in between the cracks.

Since my arrival in Austin, I've been strangely obsessed with his TV show. The first time I ever saw it, there was a cheaply produced blue screen behind him replaying the coverage of the 11th of September attacks. He was ranting and raving, spit practically dripping from his mouth, telling people to wake up and become active. I felt drawn in immediately, and became glued to his speaking style. I've been hooked ever since, often putting down the remote when I come across his show and sitting quietly, taking it all in.

I arrived at the theatre early, to be greeted by a long line out the door in gorgeous, warm, sunny spring weather. Since I had bought my ticket online weeks earlier, I was able to skip the line and head right in. There, in front of a merchandise table selling DVDs, books and my personal favorite - 'TYRANNY RESPONSE TEAM' t-shirts, was the man himself - shorter and stockier than my countless hours of mindlessly watching his show would have made me realize. He was energetic, thanking everyone for coming out, and seemed to be the host of a big party. The crowd was real young - almost nobody over forty - and much to my delight, there were some fairly hot Alex Jones fans in the house (it was an Austin crowd after all).

Once the crowd was settled in, Alex got up and spoke for a half hour. Always engrossing, Alex didn't let the full house down. He made his main point, "Terrorism is the excuse for the government to grab control", and reiterated it a few more times with references to articles that would back him up. Then, after some quick sound difficulties, the house lights dimmed and the movie began.

With dramatic drums, 911 rising through the screen, the images of the planes hitting the World Trade Center were replayed over and over, then pictures of Bush, Cheney, Osama, police militia squads, bio-weapons, planes again, and then two and a half hours of mayhem erupted on the screen. Strong links were made for the government's involvement in the Oklahoma City bombing, and thousands of ties between the Bushes, the CIA and Bin Laden were made, unveiling the reign of terror that the New World Order-ists are unleashing around the globe to subjugate the world's population into a scared, consumer driven society that must operate in a fear-laden, biometrically run closed society where individual liberties and free expression are relics of the past.

In all honesty, it made me want to run out and buy a gun.

I guess I've always been harboring anti-establishment vibes, I refuse to see doctors (last visit - March, 1992) and avoid their prescription drugs, don't drink coffee, detest the arrogance and lawlessness of police and the subtle non-differences between Republicans and Democrats. It's not that far off to think they're both fighting for the same side, and as the world spins towards a cashless society run by an ever shrinking number of ever growing banks and corporations, where does that leave the individual and his rights?

I'm not big into conspiracies, but TV, movies, prozac, viagra, soma and all the rest of the drugs that create an artificial happiness to balance the manufactured fear created by network TV only leaves a public willing to accept harassing police check points, fingerprints to get driver's licenses and groceries, and Big Brother to watch over us all. Dependence on government is an awful thing, and I believe that it's time for people to stand up against this tyranny, not by shooting cops and politicians, but by simply choosing to live without fear and stand up to the horrible trends assailing this country and the world. Don't fall in line with massive religions, just try not to hurt your neighbor. Don't shop at big corporate chains like Walmart, try not to get all your news from CNN or FOX, but to go out live, read, make informed decisions and come to creative conclusions that go past agreeing with Bill O'Reilly's Talking Points (cleverly reinforced by literally repeating everything he says by writing it on the screen) (cleverly reinforced by literally repeating everything he says by writing it on the screen).

Wake up folks, check out Alex Jone's website. Look around, get alternative news stories, begin to think, vote, take a stand. Become aware of what exactly happens when the government forces you to carry a national ID card. Does that act prevent terrorism? No, the federal anti-terrorism budget was tripled after the Oklahoma City bombing, now it's been upped countless number of times to fight the new war on terror. Like the war on drugs, the war on poverty, the war on illiteracy.
